The Guidelines for Safe Recreational Water Environments serves as a general guideline for safe recreational water environments. Their is an updated 2009 version that looks at the current knowledge of health hazards and risks connected with the recreational water use. Specifically, water quality contaminated by sewage, free-living microorganisms, sunlight, heat, exposure to cold, injury, and drowning are addressed as well as the control, monitoring, and management options.

This is done to provide as basis for the development of public health approaches, standards, and regulations to control risks in recreational water environments and provide a framework for local decision-making. This should also be used for industries and operators assessing potential health impacts of developments in recreational water areas.
